Biomixing by Chemotaxis and Efficiency of Biological Reactions: the Critical Reaction Case
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many phenomena in biology involve both reactions and chemotaxis. These processes can clearly influence each other, and chemotaxis can play an important role in sustaining and speeding up the reaction. In continuation of our work [14], we consider a model with a single density function involving diffusion, advection, chemotaxis, and absorbing reaction. The model is motivated, in particular, by the studies of coral broadcast spawning, where experimental observations of the efficiency of fertilization rates significantly exceed the data obtained from numerical models that do not take chemotaxis (attraction of sperm gametes by a chemical secreted by egg gametes) into account. We consider the case of the weakly coupled quadratic reaction term, which is the most natural from the biological point of view and was left open in [14]. The result is that similarly to [14], the chemotaxis plays a crucial role in ensuring efficiency of reaction. However, mathematically, the picture is quite different in the quadratic reaction case and is more subtle. The reaction is now complete even in the absence of chemotaxis, but the timescales are very different. Without chemotaxis, the reaction is very slow, especially for the weak reaction coupling. With chemotaxis, the timescale and efficiency of reaction are independent of the coupling parameter.

Biomixing by Chemotaxis and Enhancement of Biological Reactions
Many processes in biology involve both reactions and chemotaxis. However, to the best of our knowledge, the question of interaction between chemotaxis and reactions has not yet been addressed either analytically or numerically. We consider a model with a single density function involving diffusion, advection, chemotaxis, and absorbing reaction. The model is motivated, in particular, by studies ...
متن کاملCatalytic Evaluation of Palladium Nanoparticles on Silica-Grafted n-Propyl-Diaza-15-Crown-5 (PNP-SGPDC) in the Heck and Suzuki Reactions
Silica-grafted n-propyl-diaza-15-crown-5 (SGPDC) with immobilized palladium nanoparticles was found as an efficient heterogeneous catalytic system for the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions and satisfied results were obtained. Different derivatives of aryl halides and alkenes under the Heck reaction were converted to the corresponding products with good efficiency. The presence of elec...
متن کاملI-8: Sperm Chemotaxis towards Progesterone,A Guiding Mechanism That May Be Used to Select The Best Spermatozoa for Assisted Reproduction
Background: Spermatozoa are able to sense an attractant molecule gradient and as a consequence, orient their movement towards the source of the attractant. This mechanism is known as sperm chemotaxis. In recent years, our laboratory contributed to the knowledge of several features of mammalian sperm chemotaxis. These include the size and physiological state of the chemotactic sperm population, ...

For large and complex reacting systems, computational efficiency becomes a critical issue in process simulation, optimization and model-based control. Mechanism simplification is often a necessity to improve computational speed. We present a novel approach to simplification of reaction networks that formulates the model reduction problem as an optimization problem and solves it using geneti...
متن کاملMetal Hypersensitivity in Orthodontic Patients
Orthodontic treatment of individuals with metal hypersensitivity is a matter of concern for the orthodontist. Orthodontic appliances contain metals like Nickel, Cobalt and Chromium etc. Metals may cause allergic reactions and are known as allergens. Reaction to these metals is due to biodegradation of metals in the oral cavity. This may lead to the formation of corrosion products and their expo...
